Description
As granted by the Constitution (Article II, Section 2, Clause 1), Presidents have the power to grant clemency in one or more of the following ways: the ability to grant a full pardon, to commute a sentence, or to rescind a fine. Along with that power, several of our US Presidents have issued some very NOTORIOUS Presidential Pardons.
In this activity, students are assigned a specific pardon to evaluate or you can have them do several, it's up to you.
They will complete a graphic organizer create to evaluate the reasoning and consequences of the "notorious" pardon. Students have remarked that the enjoyed this activity. The reading was relatively short and it offered the opportunity for great class discussions.
You can extend it in many ways!
The list of notorious pardons include:
Confederate citizens,
Jimmy Hoffa,
Mark Felt,
Vietnam Draft Dodgers,
Richard Nixon,
Carl Steinbrenner and
Casper Weinbrener.
