Number: Mode, Mean, Median and Range - Problem Solving

We devised this resource for our classrooms to support, primarily, the language acquisition of Mode, Mean, Median and Range for our children. We knew that they could find totals, find the difference, order numbers and identify the middle number within a group of numbers - the difficulty they had was remember which word required which strategy.

As a result, we developed this step-by-step guide to both language acquisition and independent solutions for mode, mean, median and range.

The PowerPoint begins with a vocabulary poster which can be printed off, enlarged for classroom displays, or reduced to place inside your children's math books, or home learning folders. Following this, there is an example of how to find the mode, mean, median and range with a given set of numbers - again this can be printed and displayed.

Following on from this, there are a series of slides, each requires the children to order the numbers, then solve the mode, mean, median and range. As the slides develop, the language support reduces, until by the end of the presentation, the only words on the screen are the four key words needed.

We found that our children learnt the language along with the skills. The benefit of this resource is that the numbers can be changed, so you can create more and more slides to support your children, or print off the presentation for workstation learning, or homework.
