Description
All these resources go with and then extend this story-lecture from History For Humans: The Panama Canal and Roosevelt’s Big Stick Policy
This story-lecture teaches the amazing story of the construction of the Panama Canal and how that epitomized America becoming under Roosevelt’s and his Big Stick Policy. This is the second episode on US Imperialism and comes with an interactive notesheet, google form or PDF quiz, and an extension lesson plan that has the students map essential aspects of American imperialism and then read and analyze primary sources arguing for and against American empire. You can decide to teach both or just one of them, depending on your needs but both are available and so are answer keys for everything! Download and breathe.
The video is designed to teach students so they learn, understand, and remember through the power of story. By focusing on the amazing challenges and difficulties of building the canal and then unpacking the surrounding context related to the project and America rising to become an imperial power under Roosevelt, students will think critically about America’s place in the world and Roosevelt’s legacy.
