Description

Students will read excerpts from 3 primary sources from George Washington's presidency and life (his inauguration, his first Inaugural Address, and his death) and answer 29 questions. They will then complete up to 6 comprehension and extension tasks (word clouds, timelines, his precedents, and more!). This can be completed as a learning packet, divided throughout a unit on the Early Republic, or used as primary source analysis stations around the room to review Washington's presidency. The answers are included where appropriate and this would be great for a sub!

Sample questions include:
--The Treaty of Paris was signed in 1783, so why wasn’t Washington inaugurated as president until 1789?
--Who was Livingstone and why did he administer the oath of office?
--Compare and contrast Washington’s inauguration/oath of office scene with that of modern presidents. Are they more similar or different and why? Try using 3 specific examples in your answer.
--Identify Washington’s different reactions to being elected president.
--What phrase or identification can replace “great assemblage of communities and interests?” Give an example of two such communities/interests from the historical context.
--What is the overarching topic of the final paragraph and why was it a concern of Washington’s?
--In your own words, what was Washington’s “unvaried rule” during his life?
--In what way(s) could Washington be considered the “Father of his Country?” What other title, supported by the historical context, could he have and why?
