Description

This is a package of two different labs (five pages total) geared toward middle level physical science or introductory chemistry students. Alka-seltzer tablets, yeast packets and other commonly available materials are all that is required to conduct these activities. The first lab activity examines how changing surface area and temperature influence reaction rate. The second activity examines the creation, analysis and measurement of a simple exothermic and a simple endothermic reaction.

Answer keys and documents in both word and pdf format are also included, as well as the five pages of student lab handouts in this zip file. The NGSS Learning Standard and student learning goals are also included.

NGSS Learning Standard

MS.Chemical Reactions

Students who demonstrate understanding can:

MS-PS1-6. Undertake a design project to construct, test, and modify a device that either releases or absorbs thermal energy by chemical processes.

Learning Goals

Upon completion of these lab activities the student will be able to:

1. list two or more factors that influence the rate of reaction and explain how these factors influence the rate of reaction.

2. distinguish between endothermic and exothermic reactions and list an example of each type of reaction.
