Description

This zip file contains many different activities (67 pages of student handouts and 1 PowerPoint with a total of 61 slides) which can be used to compose a unit for chemistry students involving topics in Redox and Electrochemistry. Topics in this unit include determination of oxidation numbers, differences between oxidation and reduction, oxidizing and reducing agents, writing half reactions and net ionic equations, balancing redox reactions, using a replacement series to determine whether a reaction will occur, determination of the voltage of an electrochemical cell and using this data to determine if the reaction is spontaneous, comparison of different kinds of electrochemical cells and more.

A lab activity on the construction of a voltaic cell is contained within this package. This lab activity contains a virtual component which uses a computer animation to reinforce the associated concepts if the materials for the construction of the cell are not available.

The components of this lesson can be used in the design of nearly any high school chemistry course as well as some physical science courses.  The components this unit addresses in the NGSS Standards and Common Core Standards are indicated at the end of this description.

Most documents are included in both word docx as well as pdf format to allow editing for specific teacher needs.   Many of the activities are well suited for usage in a distance learning environment.

Upon the completion of this unit the student will be able to:

1. determine the oxidation state for any element in a compound.

2. define the terms oxidation, reduction, oxidizing agent, and reducing agent

3. ascertain what is the missing reactant or product in a balanced equation.

4. differentiate between the element that is being oxidized versus the element being reduced.

5. write and balance half-reactions for oxidation and reduction of free elements and their ions.

6. identify and label the parts of a voltaic cell and the direction of electron flow, given the reaction equation or cell diagram.

7. use an activity series to determine whether a redox reaction is spontaneous.

8. calculate the voltage of output of a cell from the standard electrode potential chart.

9. determine the type of electrochemical cell from a diagram or written equation.

NGSS Standards Addressed

HS-PS1-2. Construct and revise an explanation for the outcome of a simple chemical reaction based on the outermost electron states of atoms, trends in the periodic table, and knowledge of the patterns of chemical properties.

HS-PS1-3. Plan and conduct an investigation to gather evidence to compare the structure of substances at the bulk scale to infer the strength of electrical forces between particles.
