The Roman Republic – DBQ Activity:
The main goal of this lesson is to have student analyze primary and secondary sources to compare Roman & U.S governments & determine how Democratic the Roman Republic was.
A PowerPoint is included to provide student instructions for each activity option.
There are 2 different DBQ Options for this activity. Each with some similar and different documents. Each has a slightly different focus. There 3 different ways students can use and analyze each DBQ
DBQ Option 1 – Comparing the Roman Republic to the U.S. Government.(6 Documents total)
- Option 1 – Students answer the questions based on the documents
- Option 2 – Students Complete the Comparison organizer and explain the similarities and differences between U.S. and Roman Governments
- Option 3 – Based on the Documents, complete the worksheet by deciding if you Agree, or Disagree with each statement
DBQ Option 2 – How Democratic was the Roman Republic? (7 Documents total)
- Option 1 – Students answer the questions based on the documents
- Option 2 – Complete the Graphic Organizer by gathering examples of how Rome was and wasn’t Democratic
- Option 3 – Based on the Documents, complete the worksheet by deciding if you Agree, or Disagree with each statement

Conclusion Question: Students are asked to rate how similar or democratic the Roman Government is compared to ours today on a scale of 1 - 10
