Description

Provide scaffolding! Encourage positive feedback! Teach academic vocabulary!

Do you have students sharing their thinking via self-made videos they post on Flipgrid, Seesaw, Padlet, Google Classroom or other online platform? Videos help make students’ thinking visible in a very engaging format.  Having other students comment on those videos takes the learning a step further, by helping them learn to effectively critique others.

Although students are quite comfortable watching and commenting on online clips, classroom videos are not the same as those on social media. The emojis, abbreviations, language, and tone of Internet remarks often are not appropriate or conducive to learning in an educational setting. This type of academic vocabulary and interaction often needs to be intentionally taught and practiced.

This resource not only provides:

  • a handy reference sheet for students
  • a suggested lesson plan
  • a small group activity for practicing using the sentence frames.

Use all or part of the lesson plan to meet the specific needs in your classroom. Originally designed for math, the sentence frames are suitable for other subjects as well.
