Description
Looking for an interactive way to engage your students in learning about the states within the United States and regions? Or, perhaps you are seeking out a new way to have your students present information? Through creativity and research, students will be participating in a hands on experience where they will showcase what they have learned about a state in the United States!
What is a state float? While it would be an amazing task to design an actual float as seen in parades, trying to accommodate that in a classroom would be nearly impossible! However, through the use of some everyday materials, including recyclables, students will participate in designing a hand-held float.
Your students (individual or groups) will research a state to identify valuable information about the state. They will take what they have learned and researched to create a "float" on top of a shoe box or Kleenex box! Before you know it, you'll be one of the audience members at a one-of-a-kind parade!

I created this unit because I love teaching Social Studies to my 4th Graders, and watching their excitement as we learn about the regions and states! My students truly enjoyed this project and a different approach to learning, researching, and presenting. My ultimate goal is to have offered differentiation within this unit so that it may fit your classroom and your needs, yet something that is simple enough that will require minimal prep time on your part, as well.
