Description

In the next phase of the unit, we have defined what civilization is. Now, we will introduce a few of the cultural regions of South America. While discussing these civilizations, I remind the students that their summative project will be creating a website on a civilization of their choosing, hopefully, they can start thinking which one to pick over the next few lessons.

Bellwork:  Describe two characteristics of civilization and give an example of each.

Instruction: Native Americans in Mexico and in Central and South America built large empires. Among them were the empires of the Mayas, Aztecs, and Incas. Use the following link to explore the civilizations of the Mayas, Incas, and Aztecs and answer the questions that follow.

Exit Ticket: Pick one civilization and explain how the Ancient Mayas, Incas, or the Aztecs had the characteristics of a civilization. Answer in complete sentences using the chart below
