In the 4th lesson of my Age of Exploration Unit, the students are introduced to Spanish and Portuguese explorers. The students are reminded that their unit assessment is to decide if Columbus is a hero or a villain, so, they should start forming their opinions during this lesson.
Bellwork: Watch this video and answer the questions that follow. In 1492, what caused Columbus to begin his search for a sea route to the Far East? Based on the video, what type of adjectives would you use to describe Columbus?
Instruction: Use the maps and text to help answer the scaffolding questions below.
Exit Ticket: Using the structured writing chart, answer the following question: Should we think of Columbus as the one who “discovered” the Americas? Why or why not?
