Description

This card game was devised to support students develop a greater knowledge of linking formal vocabulary with everyday informal language - as well as preparing them for assessments in language and developing their formal writing skills in non-fiction genres.

This product contains:

  • 54 game cards (54 formal and 54 informal words) (108 words in total)
  • Instructions
  • Answer Key for all 54 pairs of words

Playing is easy. Print the words for the game and cut the cards into the 54 playing cards. Each child receives at least one card - ensuring that all the cards are handed out. Select a child to read the "informal word" on their card. The children then look at their cards to see if they have the "formal word" which matches the informal word given. If they do, they read the word out, then read the next formal word on their card to continue the game.

The game continues until all of the cards have been used. For teachers, school staff or as a home based activity, there is also an answer sheet which links all words together - of course, another challenge could be for the children to find as many other formal and informal words as they can to add to the game.

As the children play this game, they will be learning 54 pairs of formal and informal words to support their vocabulary and writing development. Once the children have played it a number times and understood the rules, swap the cards around the children. Play again.

You will find that students will start learning and reciting the words when others reveal what is on their cards.

To further develop the game, why not:

  • Ask the children to find other pairs of formal and informal words to add to the game
  • Start with the formal first and children have to identify the informal word which matches the formal
  • Use the cards as dominoes for a learning centre - where the formal must join up with the informal word.
  • Time the children with a stopwatch - what is the fastest time the children can complete the loop game in?

Our children love these games, especially trying to find extra words which we had not even thought of when developing the activity. They can now apply their knowledge to their own writing.

We hope that your children enjoy this game as much as ours do.

Thank you for visiting our store.

Best wishes
