Description

Welcome! This listing features a full-page study guide about the tools of astronomy and star classification. In this activity, students will perform the following tasks.
  • Explain the relationship between the visible light a star emits and electromagnetic radiation
  • Identify which color has the longer wavelength
  • Cite three examples of the visible light spectrum other than visible light
  • State what refracting, reflecting and radio telescopes have in common in how they function
  • Identify the most ideal geographical location for an observatory
  • Explain the purpose of a spectrograph in a telescope
  • Analyze and answer general questions about constellations
  • Classify the Milky Way
  • Rank constellation, galaxy, solar system, universe and star from smallest to largest
  • Explain how scientists use the parallax effect
  • Identify the three main characteristics astronomers use to classify stars
  • Order classifications of stars from smallest to largest
  • Explain what the color of a star reveals
  • Identify what two factors affects the brightness of a star
  • Identify what two factors affects a stars’ apparent magnitude
  • State what two characteristics about stars a Hertzsprung-Russel diagram plots.
  • Interpret a Hertzsprung-Russel diagram

I assign this activity in the galaxies and stars space science unit in my seventh grade earth science class. Students will need access to a space science textbook that covers the titled topic. Students will also need access to a Hertzsprung-Russell diagram for this activity, which is likely displayed in their textbook.

I provided a complete key with the detailed answers in bold red font. I also included an additional page that offers an answer bank for the ten short answer questions and a word bank for the fill-in-the-blank questions for students who may need it.

This PDF file will become editable upon conversion to Microsoft Word using an Adobe Acrobat Reader DC Program.

I appreciate your interest. This resource complements the other star and galaxy-themed activities in my store.
