Description

You can make your second grade time unit have much deeper connections by including reading passages, history, writing, science, math, and art in your lessons. I LOVE teaching concepts in a low prep, cross-curricular way, and that’s what you’ll find in this differentiated telling time extension resource. Let me help you add some interest and save your valuable time!

How can you use this packet?
  • reading lessons
  • independent work
  • partner/small group activity
  • reading and writing centers
  • science/math lesson
  • art activity
  • fun, purposeful time filler

In this resource you will find 13 student pages:
  • 1-page historical biography of Benjamin Banneker - great for Black History Month. Flesch-Kincaid readability score is at grade level 2.6. Keep in mind that all readability scores are approximate.
  • 7 Benjamin Banneker factual and inference comprehension questions
  • 1-page “I’m Pretty Good at Telling Time” reading passage w/writing prompt (Flesch-Kincaid readability score is at grade level 1.6)
  • Time to Rhyme!word search (words that rhyme with time) plus challenge version
  • Clockwise - short partner/small group exploration of circular motion
  • Clockwise and Counterclockwise hands-on activity - there are 2 difficulty levels for this activity. The first one has simpler directions with pictures. The second version has text-only directions for a deeper ranging activity for your higher level students. Both levels are self-explanatory and combine science, math, and art by using simple supplies (string, pencils and paper) to draw circles, adjusting radius length and concluding how radius is proportional to circumference.
  • Science Journal sheet (lined and unlined options) w/4 questions about the activity. This activity comes in two versions  for differentiation. The first one has lower level questions, while the second version has higher level questions that require more inference.
  • My Favorite Time of the Day opinion writing prompt with space for a picture
  • Pizza Time! - students draw and color hands on a pizza clock to show the best time to eat pizza and decorate w/toppings. Includes a short opinion writing prompt.

Also includes a note to the teacher with list of recommended read-alouds and answer keys.
