Description

Students will learn about the nuclear disaster at Chernobyl in 1986 by visiting 3 websites (National Geographic, History Channel, and BBC), answering 12 questions, and completing a creative task. The web articles discuss the event itself, the impact on animals, how it is being handled and remembered today, and more! The answers are included where appropriate.

Sample questions include:
--If the Cold War was not happening at the time of the disaster, do you think it still would have been covered up, why or why not?
--Why was this event dangerous for people in other countries?
--Why is it important for the region that there is a healthy and active beaver population?
--Compare and contrast the views held by scientists on the relationship between the animal population and the still high radiation levels.
--Do you agree with the decision to make Chernobyl a tourist attraction, why or why not? Regardless if you agree or not, identify some precautions you think should be in effect for the people who visit.
