It covers the structure of the opinion essay, how it conforms to the five-paragraph essay, model essays, language skills, and peer editing tools.  LESSON #1: This is the first editable PowerPoint (PPT) lesson plan in a series of three lessons. It covers the basic structure of an opinion essay. It highlights the differences between an opinion essay and an argumentative (or persuasive) essay. It includes a model essay for students to analyze. The model essay presents one author's opinion about recycling, reducing, and reusing. It discusses how an opinion essay conforms to the five-paragraph essay structure (including an introduction, 3 body paragraphs, and a conclusion).

Students are reminded that the introduction should hook the reader, map out where you are going with the essay, and directly state a thesis.

The body paragraphs should each have a topic sentence and supporting details that support the thesis.

The conclusion should signal the end of the writing, summarize the main points, restate the thesis, and share a concluding thought.

This introductory lesson walks students through how to write a thesis statement and where it is placed in the essay, along with strategies for supporting a thesis with reasons, facts, details, and examples. It also touches on what constitutes a good conclusion (and what should NOT be included in a concluding paragraph).

Homework asks students to write an opinion essay on bullying in schools.

This PPT has graphic organizers to helps students organize their ideas around the topic, their opinion, and reasons to support their opinion.

LESSON #2: This is the second editable PowerPoint (PPT) lesson plan in a series of three lessons. It reviews the basic structure of an opinion essay. It reviews how an opinion essay conforms to the five-paragraph essay structure (including an introduction, 3 body paragraphs, and a conclusion).

This lesson focuses on developing the three parts of the opinion essay (the introduction, body, and conclusion). Students are asked to share their answers to the homework from the previous lesson (on school bullying). They will also see a model opinion essay on school bullying that they will analyze.

The language covers language instruction on stating an opinion (from less direct language to more direct language). This lesson also contains questions to guide students through peer editing.

Homework asks students to use the feedback from class to revise their opinion essay on bullying in schools.

It discusses the importance of finding reputable sources, language for citing sources, and avoiding plagiarism.

Homework asks students to write an opinion essay on the same topic as the model essay - "Should schools use textbooks or e-books?".
