Description
Why President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation and how it changed America is the exploration question for the lesson that goes with this History For Humans video made specifically for 5-7 graders!
Students complete an interactive note sheet with fill-in-the-blanks, critical thinking questions, a quick map activity, and more as they watch the video! The video teaches in a way to support diverse learners with text on screen and powerful historical images to bring history to life. The fill-in-the-blanks ensure understanding of the main ideas and the critical thinking questions gets students to think deeper on those ideas. Then there is an optional political cartoon analysis activity that has students understand how northerners and southerners viewed the Emancipation Proclamation and President Lincoln.
The goes over Lincoln's main goal for the war and why at first he promised to intervene with slavery and why he eventually issued the Emancipation Proclamation that freed all the enslaved people of the Confederacy. They also learn how it helped the Union win the war by allowing and encouraging Black men to fight in the Union Army. It teaches why the Border States' enslaved people were not freed, Juneteenth, and how in the end, the 13th Amendment forever ended slavery.
