Description
Help your BC students investigate life in the Colony of Victoria and the Colony of British Columbia by exploring the Colonial Despatches sent back to England. The Project lists 4 different inquiry questions, referred to as 'curriculum challenges':
-
What were the real reasons for creating the Colony of British Columbia?
-
Did the Gold Rush radically change daily life in Victoria?
-
Were the Douglas Treaties and the Numbered Treaties fairly negotiated?
-
Did Governor James Douglas deserve to be knighted?
These challenges will give your students experience in critical thinking, judging the credibility of primary documents and identifying continuity and change, which are all curricular competencies in the new BC social studies curriculum. If you want to give your students to further develop these competencies, please see my Canadian Letters and Images Project and Great Unsolved Canadian Mysteries products, which are also FREE.
