Description

Students will read excerpts from the Louisiana Purchase Treaty and President Jefferson's address to Congress regarding it in 1803 and answer 12 questions. They will then read 5 related quotes and answer 16 questions. Lastly, students will analyze 3 political cartoons by answering 4 questions. The answers are included where appropriate and this would be great for a sub!

 Sample questions include:
--Identify a key reason for the ratification of this treaty. Cite evidence from the text to support your answer.
--Explain what will happen to any French citizens living in the territory being ceded.
--What did Jefferson identify as a potential threat to America?
--How does Jefferson draw connections between himself and President Washington?
--How does the quote illustrate the nature of the Hamilton-Jefferson relationship?
--Does King seem to agree with the purchase, why or why not?
--What does White see for the future of America should Americans settle in the Louisiana Territory?
--Pulling from the historical context, what could someone have countered Livingston with as far as the “noble work” achieved thus far?
--Is this political cartoon supportive or critical of Jefferson and why? How can it be connected to the Louisiana Purchase?
