The American Revolution

The Trial of Lieutenant Colonel Banastre Tarleton for War Crimes

Lieutenant Colonel Banastre Tarleton was a British commander who fought during the American Revolutionary War. He has been vilified by many historians and film makers as a fiendish murderer who hanged or shot Patriot soldiers and burned their homes. In one notable battle he allegedly allowed his men to massacre surrendering Continental soldiers earning the nickname “the butcher.” Now Tarleton must face the International Criminal Court of History to determine whether he should be indicted for “war crimes.” You and your students will assume the roles of judges, attorneys, witnesses and the defendant to determine whether there is enough evidence to support his historical reputation. Additional materials will include post-activity discussion questions, extension activities, relevant documents, a time-line, glossary and list of sources.
