Description

Looking for an effective guide to the Electoral College?

By the conclusion of this PowerPoint, students will understand the purpose behind and responsibilities of the Electoral College. Tracing the existence of the Electoral College to both a desire to protect the rights of smaller states and the fears of the Founding Fathers, the presentation identifies the Article and Section of the Constitution, as well as how the numbers of electors for each state are determined and what the responsibilities of those electors are.

The presentation makes comparisons in the electoral maps of 2000, 2004, 2008, 2012, and 2016. Special attention has been given issues surrounding Florida's "butterfly" ballot in 2000.  The presentation concludes by posing students with a question: should the government abolish the Electoral College? Teachers may tailor the assignment as needed.

The presentation uses a Calibri font, includes custom animation for each slide, and is saved using a 97-2003 format. Adjustments to the PowerPoint can be made as needed.

Finally, the resource includes a one-page reading about the Electoral College, along with a series of questions based on the reading.  For those seeking distance learning options, the questions can be readily converted to a digital activity using Google Slides.

An answer key is included.

Given recent questions surrounding the nature of the Electoral College, this will be an important addition to any Social Science teacher's curriculum.
