Description

From its inception, the United States slowly expanded its borders in a seemingly inexorable march to the Pacific Ocean. This text covers the country’s geographic expansion from the Ohio Valley to the Pacific Ocean in fulfilling its “Manifest Destiny” during the first 60 years of the new American Republic, both the various means by which the new territories were acquired and incorporated into the nation’s boundaries as well as the impact of white settlement onto native lands in the Ohio Valley during that time period. This is a “warts and all” examination of this period of history; it is both a story of triumph and tragedy as well as one of heroes and villains – some of whom were both, depending on how one looks at them.

This 43 page text is divided into nine chapters: “The Northwest Ordinance," "Conflict in the Old Northwest," “The Louisiana Purchase,” “Lewis and Clark," “Florida," “The Trail of Tears," “Texas," "Oregon," and "The Mexican-American War" from my textbook “We Take Nothing by Conquest”.

These chapters are also included as part of a complete and comprehensive unit on the Westward expansion of the Continental US also available in my store. That complete unit includes not only this text but also inquiry based study guides, PowerPoints, activities, assessments and projects designed to accompany the text, along with a Teacher’s Guide for using all of the materials
