What Kind of Colonial Government?

Challenge your students to identify the type of colonial government being described in each scenario!

Students will read 6 different prompts that describe one of the three colonial governments: Royal Colony, Charter Colony, and Proprietary Colony. This is an introductory activity that will help them learn the difference between these three governments.

The first 3 scenarios are definition based, and the last 3 scenarios ask students to identify the type of government in specific colonies based on the information given. Students will also have to explain their reasoning. An answer key is provided.

My students often struggle telling the difference between Charter colonies, Royal colonies, and Proprietary colonies and this activity has really helped them tell the difference.
