Description
In learning about Shakespeare and the language within his plays, we have put together this flip-flap book using the insults found in Shakespeare's plays. Over the 50 pages of the book, there are 147 insulting words, creating 49 insults. However, in creating this flip-flap book, students can invent 100's of insults and in doing so, learn more about the language employed by William Shakespeare.
Our students loved this product. We produced a color version for the whole class to use, but such was the popularity, we provided a black and white copy for each student to take home and make at home for a home learning activity. We had great fun in class trying to create, what we felt, was the worst insult, the best insult, and tried to identify in our reading, where these insults occurred in Shakespeare's plays.
We also used the colored cards separately as an additional activity, cutting each one out. We then created a game where each student took one of each of the three colors to create a random insult. This was another spin on the flip-flap book idea - but provided another experience for our students to learn the language of Shakespeare and embrace his work with enjoyment, fun and, quite often, laughter. It inspired them to research what some of the insults meant and referred to, and lots of discussion as to why, for examples, body parts, colors and animals are so often used - paying attention to which body parts, colors and animals are referred to!
We hope that you enjoy this flip-flap book and the enjoyment that it can bring to your literacy sessions when studying Shakespeare. It can be used to introduce the vocabulary in a fun way, during the activities as a different activity, promoting fun learning, or at the end, where the children can try and find, then recreate insults they have read in their studies using the flip-flap book - even creating their own insults.
