Word Classification - Whole Class Challenge Game

This game has been devised to support pupils acquisition of word vocabulary and language. In a fun, exciting and game based scenario, children are introduced to a range of sentences. Each sentence includes verbs, adverbs, nouns, adjectives, prepositions and determiners.

The game encourages children to label the words correctly with classification labels. Not only that, but as the children become more proficient in their knowledge and skills, they are then extended to think about using relative clauses, expanded noun phrases and adverbial phrases.

The game further extends the children's skills by setting further challenges, including working in different groupings, timing themselves, challenging the teacher, as well as then taking the game cards and writing their own sentences to include all word classifications, phrases and clauses.

Ultimately the main aim is to improve the detail of children's writing. I have found that this game has done that with my children.

Full and detailed instructions are provided with photographs to support, as well as key questions to ask the children at every stage of the game to target teaching points and enhance learning/understanding at the same time.

This is a fun game, and you will find the children naturally extend the activities with their own ideas and will come back to this time and time again.
