Description
This engaging lesson on global demographics from Shawneen Morrison gets students out of their seats and moving in order to create a strong visual representation of regional, linguistic, and religious diversity in the world.
Then, in the final round of the activity, students receive tokens based on the likelihood that they would have various advantages related to economic opportunity if they lived in any given region. After the tokens are tallied, a box of cookies is distributed to the class in proportions that realistically illustrate the global distribution of wealth.
Following the activity, a guided discussion explores concepts related to the history, ethics, and challenges of addressing wealth disparity and other issues related to global justice. A complete discussion guide that overviews major philosophical issues surrounding global justice in this era of economic globalization is included as background information for the instructor.
Don't panic about the length! The activity is easily implemented and the vast majority of pages are visual aids including signs and token sheets.
