The 12 lessons cover all elements of WW1 from the taking of Serbia and Herzegovina which led to the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand right through to the signing of the Treaty of Versailles. The contents of the lessons are as follows:

The plans include a variety of activities to ensure that each session is exciting and stimulating, as well as ensuring that all students remain on task and engaged throughout. Web links are included to specific You Tube videos and websites to support an understanding of the impact of war, including real footage (particularly of life in the trenches and the celebrations in Trafalgar Square, London at the end of the war). Activities include:

  • Debating
  • Designing timelines of different aspects of the war
  • Envoying activity
  • Questioning and researching own responses to issues
  • Poster design
  • Shield Design
  • Mapping skills, plotting countries, identifying allies and central forces
  • Mind mapping skills
  • Digital presentations

Along with the lesson plans are all the worksheets teachers need to conduct each of the 12 lessons, including the two answer keys needed.

Each lesson plan includes:

  • Session number
  • Aims of the session
  • Lesson Plan (with links to worksheets, web resources)
  • Outcomes
  • Resources for the session

The detail of the lesson plan includes all instructions for the activities, as well as screen shots of the activity sheets to ensure that it is clear which activity matches with each lesson.

We have used this resource in our own classroom and the students were motivated throughout, enjoying the links to digital media and observing actual footage. The word lists developed their vocabulary so that discussions were informed and used appropriate language to a high level. Not only that, but this project provided children with a clear understanding of World War 1, the role of the United Nations and NATO in keeping peace today, and how the seeds of World War 2 were planted within this era as a result of the Treaty of Versailles.

We hope that your students enjoy this project as much as ours did.

Best wishes
