Description
This product, made by Shawneen Morrison, includes propaganda posters, photographs, and two recipes related to life on the home front during World War Two. It is designed to foster a sense of civic responsibility. In the modern day when many Americans are unaware of U.S. military endeavors abroad, it can be difficult for students to understand the mentality on the home front during World War Two. Citizens really felt as though their lifestyle sacrifices would strongly affect the outcome of the war. Consequently, most of the country willingly accepted rationing of food and other items, the banning of some recreational activities, government mandated limits on women’s fashions, and government control over the availability of consumer goods that might compete for resources with the war effort,
This presentation helps students connect with the Greatest Generation. Then, in my classroom, I conclude with a class discussion about modern issues that might motivate today’s generation to make lifestyle changes of a similar magnitude. That conversation inevitably leads to heated debate over citizen responsibility with regard to environmental and national security issues.
