Description
This product, designed by Shawneen Morrison, presents students with a wide variety of legally or socially mandated expressions of patriotic loyalty during World War One that were often clear violations of civil liberties. Examples include the Palmer Raids, a jury’s acquittal of eleven men who murdered a German immigrant because the murder was “patriotic”, extreme pressure placed on high school boys to join the U.S. Boys’ Working Reserve, mob attacks on pacifists, the tar and feathering of a man who was not “patriotic enough”, campaigns against the use of foreign languages, and people jailed for criticizing the government.
Other less extreme examples are also included so students can explore their opinion of how much patriotism is healthy for a society during a time of war.
