Ada Black was an seamstress who was hired to accompany 4 men on an Arctic exploration in 1921. 2 years later, she was the only survivor. This lesson looks at the History Detective YouTube video about the remarkable story of Ada Blackjack. (Video contains closed captions for accessibility.)
The lesson includes listening comprehension questions, a PPT with a deep dive into the historical concept of usefulness of sources, as well as an analysis of the song Underestimate Me the Ada Blackjack Remix.
Students will also evaluate primary sources for usefulness and in a research activity, they will compare the perspectives of 2 different primary sources about Ada Blackjack.
