Aesop's Fables by Helen Ward: Comprehension, 10 sets of questions based on 10 Fables

These sets of 10 Comprehension questions have been devised with my class by using the book:

The book is beautifully illustrated and written for Grades 4, 5 and 6 (Y5, 6 and 7 in the UK). The book allowed me to plan some simple deduction questions for my learners, structure some sequencing questions, but also develop their reading skills in a variety of other, more complex skills in each of the comprehension sets, including:

• Inference and Deduction
• Sequencing of key events over a paragraph and over a whole story
• Reasoning using textual evidence and quotations from the story to justify
• Gathering evidence
• Giving own opinions based on what has been read
• Predicting what will happen following the story's ending
• Language analysis
• Organisation choices to develop the story further

My children loved completing these activities as the stories are short and the children can grasp the content easily, therefore allowing them to apply their knowledge to the variety of questions provided.

I set a time limit of 30 minutes for each of the sets of the questions, however, all of the sheets are editable in Word, so this can be changed to support the needs of your pupils, as well as the number questions posed in each section.
