Description

Welcome! This listing features a full-page study guide about atoms and bonds. This resource is divided into seven sections.
  • The first section is a fill-in-the-blank table where students write whether a compound is a metal + a nonmetal or a nonmetal + a nonmetal, ionic or covalent, and whether electrons are transferred or shared.
  • The second section offers periodic symbol analysis where students write the element name, classify it, identify the origin of its name by language, identify the atomic number, the atomic mass, and the number of each subatomic particle.
  • In the third section, students classify whether the stated properties are ionic, covalent, or both in description.
  • In section four, students balance the charges of ions and write ionic formulas off word expressions. I provided charges of the polyatomic ions.
  • In section five, students write Lewis symbols for five elements, following the included example.
  • In section six, students sketch six Lewis structures. A brief six-step guideline for sketching the structures is present in the margin.
  • Section seven is a true false section where students correct the underlined word in the false statement.

This PDF document will become editable upon conversion to Microsoft Word with an Adobe Acrobat Reader DC Program. It includes a key with the answers in red font.

There are sixty one questions on the study guide. This document has the same layout as my Atoms and Bonds Test, listed below. Questions are different in six of the seven sections of the test.

This resource complements the following activities about chemical bonds and Lewis structures in my store.
  • Chemical Bond Classification Table
  • Atoms and Bonds Chapter Test
  • Lewis Symbols and Structures Worksheet
  • Drawing Lewis Structures Worksheet

I assign this study guide in my eighth-grade physical science class. High school physical science teachers could also use this lesson as a remedial reinforcement activity or as an accommodation to differentiate their curriculum to meet the needs of students who struggle to learn.
