Roanoke This social studies lesson on Roanoke teaches students historical information about the first English Colony in the New World. Students will begin with a warm up activity by analyzing evidence from an evidence bag and hypothesize about the colony. After studying the history of the settlement, students will then analyze different theories on the disappearance of the missing colonists. Finally, students will create a human bar graph to debate which theory is most credible.
Jamestown This social studies lesson on Jamestown teaches students historical information about the first permanent settlement in America. Students begin by analyzing an evidence folder of forensic information about a colonist from Jamestown. After learning about the history of the settlement, student will analyze theories about the causes of the high death rate during the Starving Time. Finally, the students will line up on a spectrum ranking the theories from most credible to least.
Plymouth This lesson is designed to challenge the students’ prior knowledge of Plymouth Colony and the Pilgrims. After addressing misconceptions, the lesson will teach the students about the history of Plymouth Colony. They will learn the motivations for settlement, hardships in settlement and how the colonists overcame challenges. Finally, students will collect information and decide whether Plymouth Rock is the authentic landing spot of the Pilgrims.
