Description

Use the Close Reading Introduction MIni-Unit to provide your students with tools/strategies that they can use throughout their academic career and beyond.

Close reading is a method of literary analysis that helps our students understand complex text and develop critical thinking skills. It allows students to use reading as a tool for gaining new knowledge and understanding as they derive meaning from the text they are reading.

The Close Reading Introduction MIni-Unit has been developed to provide you with the resources necessary to successfully introduce and teach your students how to attentively read text. The sequence of this unit is as follows:

√ introduce and define the concept of close reading

√ using a teacher provided text, read carefully and attentively

√ take notes/annotate

√ analyze text based questions

√ develop answers to text based questions

√ identify text evidence to support answer

As you complete the activities included your students will use the SPADE Close Reading Strategy to analyze one nonfiction and one fiction passage. They will then use the 2 Column Notes Close Reading Strategy to analyze another nonfiction passage. Once these activities have been completed, you will be able to provide your students with opportunities for deliberate focused practice using the additional resources provided.
