Description

Would you be interested in applying for a job as a shark cage tester or an assistant on a time machine?

Your students will have a fun time reading the classified ads in The Daily Scoop to find new jobs, people seeking services, and items for sale.

Word problems can be challenging for many students. These worksheets will give your students a lot of practice solving one-step and multi-step word problems involving all 4 math operations with DECIMALS.

Each word problem is missing some information/facts. To solve the word problems, students find the missing information on The Daily Scoop classified ad pages. Use these worksheets throughout the year as you teach each decimal skill, as review worksheets, or test prep practice.

These worksheets are great for a partner activity.

Examples:

  • Jack is interested in the time traveler assistant position. Unfortunately, he does not meet the weight requirement. Jack only weighs 170.5 pounds. So, Jack decides to gain weight before he applies for the job. If Jack gains 1.5 pounds a day, how many days will it take him to reach the weight requirement to travel back in time? (Students must find the weight requirement for the time traveler assistant’s position advertised in the classified ads.)

  • Rachel read the help-wanted ad for testing shark cages in The Daily Scoop. She applied for the position and got the job. Rachel made $7,618.40 during her first month. How many hours did Rachel work as a shark cage tester during the first month? (Students must find how much the shark cage tester makes per hour advertised in the classified ads.)

  • Victoria bought 6 Titanic replica plates advertised for sale in the classified ads. The package weighed 6.2 pounds. What was Victoria’s total bill for the plates and shipping costs? (Students must find the price of the Titanic plates and the shipping cost advertised in the classified ads.)
