Description

This is one of my favorite lessons to teach during the year. The Declaration of Independence is the worlds greatest breakup note. I use this lesson as an introduction into my brief unit over the Declaration of Independence and “The Art of the Breakup.“

i open this lesson by playing a joke on the students and tell them I have found a breakup note left behind in class. you can get a copy of that note for FREE in ten preview of this file. The note serves as a great hook to the lesson.

Next, I go through the notes with the students and teach them about the document. The students learn about the people who influenced Jefferson’s writing. They will learn about John Locke, Richard Henry Lee, George Mason, and the Committee of 5. They will be able to follow along easily with the fill in the blank notes that match the information from the presentation. At the conclusion of the notes students will complete comprehension questions with the handout that is attached. The notes and worksheet come with answer keys as well.
