Description

I created this unit to cover the anatomy and functions of the digestive system. Topics covered includes: function of the digestive system, phases of the digestive system, common digestive enzymes and hormones, organs of the GI tract and accessory organs. Also included are the function and basic anatomy for the mouth, teeth, salivary glands, tongue, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, gallbladder, liver and pancreas.
Download includes:
  • Written and Video Instructions (PDF/MP3): I included both a quick written set of instructions as a guide as well as more detailed video instructions walking you through each of the items to help with logistics of teaching the unit as well as ways to modify the unit to meet the. needs of your classroom
  • "OHH SO CLOSE" Game (Hook) (PPT and PDF): I created this game as a fun opener to get the students ready for the unit. Students will be given a fun fact about the digestive system and then generate a number guess for the answer. The correct answer is revealed and points are calculated as the difference between the correct answer and their guess. Student or team with the lowest points win! Game is played using PowerPoint and an optional PDF print-out or fillable PDF for students to fill out as they are playing (See video preview for a sneak peek)
  • "DIGESTIVE SYSTEM PRESENTATION"(PPT): I created this PowerPoint as a way to lecture on the main points of the Digestive System (topics included are listed in the first paragraph of the description above). In addition to the information, I have sprinkled in a few "POP QUIZ" fun fact questions to help with engagement (See video preview for a sneak peek).
  • "DIGESTIVE SYSTEM NOTES" (PDF): This is an optional item for your students to use as you lecture. This notes page has some of the information already printed and students will fill in the blanks as you lecture. I find this helps speed up lecture time as well as allows students to listen more than they are writing. I included both a printable and fillable copy. Answer Key included
  • "DIGESTIVE SYSTEM ENZYMES AND HORMONES" (PDF): This is another optional item to give to students to fill out as you are lecturing. The hormones and enzymes are highlighted in red in the PowerPoint and this is a place to put them all in a chart to study with. Answer Key included
  • "DIGESTIVE SYSTEM CUT AND PASTE" (PDF or Google Slides): This activity is great for helping students not only become familiar with the names of the major organs of the digestive system, but also how they connect and are placed in the body. The PDF version allows students to color code and cut and paste the items into the picture of the body. With the Google Slides version, they can simply color code and then drag and drop into place. Video Instructions are included on how to do the Google Slides version. Answer Key included.
  • "MEASURING THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM" (PDF): This is a great hand-on activity for students to review the major organs and see first hand how long the digestive tract runs. Yarn, scissors and rulers are needed to perform the activity where students will work in pairs or small groups to measure out the lengths of the organs of the GI tract and then tie them all together. Some math is included as well as follow up questions for students to complete.
  • "DIGESTIVE SYSTEM TEST" (Microsoft Word): I created a 32 question multiple choice test with 6 optional short essay questions and included anatomical pictures of the organs. Video instructions are included to show how modifications can be made, Answer Key included.

    Digestive System Unit

Posted by Allison Loftin on Sep 15th 2022

Very engaging activities and presentations. I know it is geared more towards anatomy classes, but I used it in my med term class. I would like to edit the presentation to include more of the combining forms, roots & suffix definitions into the presentations. Overall a great purchase!
