Description

Distance Learning with Earth Day STEM!!! PLEASE READ: This is a PDF file! It was made as a PDF so it could be put into different platforms for digital learning. It is not interactive. It is a lesson that can be sent to students to work on at their own pace! It can be uploaded into Google Classroom as a PDF to use or onto other platforms. It is just meant to guide and direct students as they work on their own pace. (mini lesson with STEM challenge)

Check out STEMsational STEM for more resources.

This lesson was created for my own students! This lesson is appropriate for 2nd through 5th grades! I wanted to be able to share a STEM Challenge with an Earth Day connection! This lesson is what I came up with! My teachers will share it with their individual classes on various types of platforms.

The lesson starts with the cute story, I am Earth. It gives the students background on Earth and why pollution is harmful! Then it gives students more information on Earth Day and the history behind Earth Day. There are two additional links to help teach students about the difference between recyclables and trash and then one on plastic pollution. The video links are just to help enrich the students knowledge of Earth Day and how we need to protect the Earth.

Then it gives students the challenge, materials, constraints, planning, and testing. Again, students are asked to engineer their own trash pick up device (without touching the trash of course) with supplies they have around their house! They can email their pictures to you the teacher! Or they can send videos explaining what they created, how they used, and how it works! They can simply use scrap paper to plan and design! It is also meant to be a fun and engaging way for students to learn about Earth Day while distant learning!! And...my hope is that it takes some pressure off of parents...in that it is not a worksheet...but a way for kids to use their own thinking and space to create a device to help pick up trash and save the Earth at the same time!

 This resources includes the following:

*Video links to the story - I am Earth

* Video links to story about the History of Earth Day

*Links to videos on the difference between trash and recyclable materials

*Links to video on plastic pollution

*Challenge

*Constraints

*Materials list

*Planning

*Planning Sheet for printing for student if they would like to.

*Testing Slide

*Student Examples

*Additional links for more on videos on pollution and what is being done around the world to help the Earth.

I create these resources to be used in my own classroom! I teach from this very same file! It is a good visual for students and if you were to be observed by administration. It helps to guide you with the lesson and gives the students a visual of what is expected. I work super hard on these lessons because I want my students to be engaged, have fun, and enjoy learning while they are in my classroom! I try to create real-world lessons where students have to engineer and design the solution.
It also gives them something to take home to hopefully explain the "process" of what they learned to adults at home! Please feel free to ask my questions and leave helpful feedback!! Thank you so much!!!
