Description

It’s tough to find “first day” activities that the students actually enjoy.  One of my first years I did an activity similar to this and it went so well that I knew I had to come up with a way to make it even more relatable to Health Science.  I think this is a great way to let students have a little fun on the first week as well as allowing it to be a fun ice-breaker/ get-to-know-you activity.

The set-up is easy.  Just ask students to get out a blank piece of paper and something to write/draw with.  Pull up the presentation (either with PowerPoint or Google Slides) and click through!

The instructions are simple- “draw a healthcare worker.”  They are probably going to want to ask clarifying questions, but don’t give them any more information.  Just tell them to be creative and have fun.

They will be using their drawings to  reveal areas of their personality.  I did put in a little disclaimer that this is just for fun.  But all of the characteristics are positive, so no one should get their feelings hurt!

Flip through each slide revealing each characteristic.  The last slide has them focus on an actual healthcare career.  Since this is a health science class, I thought it might be a great way for them to start thinking about which area of medicine they are most interested in.

At the conclusion you can ask how well they felt like the test matched their personalities.  I have always had pretty good discussion after games like this.  Probably because we all inherently love talking about ourselves ?

My students LOVED this...I used it as a bell ringer for Qualities of a Healthcare Worker unit.

Students giggled and talked while drawing they're health care worker. I provided only the directions on the slides and then when we analyzed the drawings they were really surprised about what they learned about themselves.

    Draw a Healthcare Worker

I am looking forward to using this one in class on the first day. I have the "draw a pig" activity as well but having a few of the same students again this year (and some in both classes this year), it is nice to be able to change it up a bit.
