Description
Students will read and analyze excerpts from Lincoln's suspension of habeas corpus and from Justice Davis' opinion on Ex parte Milligan by answering 19 questions. They will complete two tasks for a political cartoon and complete 1 comprehension activity. The answers are included where appropriate this would be great for a sub!
Sample questions include:
--Explain the relevance to this case of Milligan being a Copperhead.
--How does Davis connect human rights in America with the law? What could be at risk if that protection were taken away?
--Rewrite the 4th paragraph in your own words to demonstrate understanding.
--Provide a contextually appropriate synonym, or definition, for “vests.”
--Why might Davis have claimed that trial by jury is one of the most valuable rights a citizen can have in a free country?
--Explain the relevance of Davis’ observation of the undisputed authority of the government in peace time.
--What does it imply about the era/immediate contextual events and the case itself that this was a unanimous decision?
