Description

I scripted this four-page genetics unit exam for my high school biology class. It features seven sections. The sections are bulleted below:
  • Multiple choice (18 questions)
  • Short answer (4 questions)
  • What makes a dominant allele different from a recessive one for a trait?
  • Which parent passes on more genes to the offspring? [Answer – neither!]
  • Explain how it is possible for a daughter to look and/or behave more like her father.
  • Explain why the number of gene symbols assigned to males in a pedigree for a sex-linked trait is different than for females
  • True/False – correct the underlined word(s) (7 questions)
  • Latin root words – write the English meaning of six Latin root words
  • Standard pedigree – genotype mapping
  • Blood type pedigree – genotype mapping and phenotype identification for each individual
  • Punnett square problems/analysis
Various questions on this exam probe the students’ comprehensive understanding of Gregor Mendel, anticipated phenotypic ratios of mono- and dihybrid crosses, the Law of Independent Assortment, the Law of Segregation, probabilities of having a certain number of boys/girls in a row, the purpose of Punnett squares, phenotype versus genotype, homozygous verses heterozygous, purebred versus hybrid, heredity, recessive versus dominant traits, diploid versus haploid, the role of protein synthesis in relation to gene expression, pedigree symbol analysis, the etymology of Latin root words, blood type pedigree analysis, the ability to set up the P1 genotypic cross from a story problem, and the ability to set up a Punnett square to determine possible F1 genotypes, phenotypes, genotypic ratios, and phenotypic ratios.
