Description

This digital writing activity was made in Google Slides and was designed to be completed in 45 minutes or less. It includes step-by-step practice using a high-interest prompt: “The Most Annoying Thing Ever.” Students are taken through the process of selecting a topic, prioritizing 3 reasons for their opinion, inserting transitional phrases, adding specific details to support each reason, and creating both a hook and a concluding sentence. Each slide presents a model sentence, then allows students to come up with their own. When they finish, they will have produced a well-organized persuasive paragraph. The final slide includes instructions on how to turn this paragraph into a 5-paragraph essay, if so desired.

After using this product, students will better understand the outline for persuasive writing:

· Introduction

· Opinion

· Reason #2 + Details

· Reason #3 + Details

· Reason #1 + Details

· Conclusion

This product can be used in two ways:

1. The teacher can use “present” mode to display each slide to the entire class. (For this option, Google Classroom is not needed.) The teacher can simply display and read each model sentence, then pause while students write their own sentence. Continuing in this manner, students will all end up with a nice persuasive paragraph. If desired, students can easily illustrate their paragraph for bulletin board display.

2. Students can be assigned this writing activity in Google Drive. They can work on it independently, since each step is clearly explained and modeled. There are text boxes for students to type in. They simply copy and paste from one slide to the next, then add the new sentence until they have a complete persuasive argument.
