Description

This bundle included two of our Guided Reading question and answer comprehension sets for the two novels by Ted Hughes:

  • The Iron Man (recycling)
  • The Iron Woman (destruction of habitats, pollution, fuel hybrids and replacements)

Both texts deal with environmental issues and are engaging texts for students in 3rd, 4th and 5th grade (and beyond). Particularly supportive when thinking about World Earth Day, studying environmental issues and planning strategies to help the environment.

Details of both products can be found below:

The Iron Man

This product takes the novel "The Iron Man" by Ted Hughes, and working through each of the five chapters, sets a range of comprehension questions to explore the novel and develop the reading and comprehension skills of students. The product can be used daily with the text (not included in the product) and will last for three school weeks if used each day. For more intense work, teachers can decide on the pace of the activity linked to the needs of their students.

This resources includes:

  • 16 Question sets designed to be used daily for three weeks ranging between 5 in-depth questions and 10 questions each day
  • 143 questions overall
  • Answer key for each of the questions.

The resource uses a range of questions styles to develop the eight key reading skills of:

  • Vocabulary knowledge
  • Prediction using the text cues to support responses
  • Explanation of what is happening within the text and why
  • Inference - where the answer is not specific but can be gained by looking deeper into the authorial intent and bringing own knowledge to the text
  • Sequencing events within the text in the correct order
  • Retrieving facts, ideas and responses directly from the text (using page references to support identification)
  • Summarizing what has been read within a given section or chapter.

Each question has the abbreviation of the question type in brackets to show the coverage and balance between all the reading skills.

We developed this to support reading skills whilst also developing the study unit of recycling in both our literacy study unit and Science study unit. It would also link to the Science topic of materials (reversible and irreversible/chemical and physical changes). The student booklet was a particularly useful innovation as it saved us time in preparation - with one booklet prepared for each student at the beginning of the unit, and then was used each day for three weeks, with student responses placed in their reading journal.

The answer key ensures that teachers can assess the learning quickly and accurately either on a 1:1 with the student or as a whole class.

We developed this to support reading skills whilst also developing the study unit of recycling in both our literacy study unit and Science study unit. It would also link to the Science topic of habitats and environment (pollution and alternative fuels). It is also a fantastic text to encourage students to think about how we can care for the environment, with the outcome of the text providing an alternative, non-harmful fuel production to power the needs of all humans, and returning nature back to a state which is in harmony with our world. The student booklet was a particularly useful innovation as it saved us time in preparation - with one booklet prepared for each student at the beginning of the unit, and then was used each day for three weeks, with student responses placed in their reading journal.

We hope that your students enjoy both of these books and the resources as they continue their reading development.
