Description
Welcome! I created this Latin root word to English conversion resource to help students study the etymology of medical terminology found in the chapter about the heart for human anatomy and physiology. This worksheet features a two-column listing of twenty Latin/Greek prefixes, roots, and suffixes next to their English meaning. Then students will analyze fifteen related scientific compound words.
-
Students first are directed to slash each compound word into its prefix, root, and suffix.
-
Then students are directed to sequentially write the English meaning of each part in between forward slashes on the top numbered line.
-
Finally, students are directed to accurately define the term on the designated lines.
Example: Hypoglycemia
↓ ↓
Student answer: Hypo/glyc/emia ___Deficient / Sugar / Blood___
Definition: Hypoglycemia is a condition of low blood sugar.
The scientific terms covered in this conversion exercise are endocardium, pericardium, myocardium, epicardium, pulmonary, necrosis, coronary (arteries), systole, diastole, angina, congenital (heart defects), myocardial infarction, interatrial, endocarditis, and atherosclerosis.
This document will become editable upon conversion to Microsoft Word using an Adobe Acrobat Reader DC app. I included a complete key with the answers in red font.
This resource complements the following activities relating to the heart and the circulatory system in my store.
- Circulatory System and Heart Unit Exam
- Systemic Arteries Mapping Activity
- The Great Vein Drain Worksheet
- Systemic Blood Vessel Orientation Table
- Heart of Circulation Crossword Puzzle
I appreciate your interest. I published seventeen other Latin root word packets for various systems and units in human anatomy and physiology.
Check out my store, Parker's Product for the Sciences, to check them out and to preview other engaging science activities.
