Description
This lesson, designed by Shawneen Morrison, introduces the study of government through the four major theories of legitimate authority to govern: Divine Right, Common Good, Evolutionary Theory, and Force Theory.
Students are presented with twelve political opinion statements about effective government. After agreeing or disagreeing with the statements, they classify them by the theory that most strongly supports the opinion. In this way, students can see how consistent (rational) or inconsistent (ideological) their opinions about government are.
Common Good Theory is discussed as the dominant basis for representative democracy (developed during The Enlightenment Era) and Force Theory is discussed as the basis for capitalism.
Then, the political impact of this dual and conflicting focus is explored.
Finally, students discuss ways that they can use this new awareness to effectively advocate for their political opinions.
The lesson is fully editable to allow customization.
