Description

We wanted our students to visually learn the different representations of a number of 2D shapes. Therefore we developed this Odd One Out challenge.

This product includes 30 cards (plus 6 spare cards) for the teacher to use.

2D shapes include:

  • Circles
  • Triangles
  • Quadrilaterals
  • Regular and Irregular
  • Pentagons
  • Hexagons
  • Octagons

Each card provides four images of 2D shapes. Three shapes have the same property and belong to the same family. Students must correctly identify which shape does not belong to the family and is therefore the "Odd One Out". They should also justify their opinion using their growing mathematical knowledge and shape visualisation.

Reasons for shapes being inaccurate include (amongst other reasons):

  • Not in the same family
  • Wrong number of sides
  • Parallel sides
  • Perpendicular sides
  • Specific shape properties linked to triangles and quadrilaterals
  • Regular vs irregular

A worksheet is also provided for the pupils to record the answers to all questions on a sheet of paper. It provides another use for the activity and greater independence for the children to complete and check their answers.

A full answer key is also given to support the teacher in two formats - a second set of cards which have the Odd One Out circled, and an answer sheet with all the correct letters of the Odd Ones Out listed.

This activity can be used in a variety of classroom and home situations:

  • Math Centers
  • Home learning activities
  • Review of learning
  • Introducing 2D shapes
  • Class challenges
  • Team Games
  • Flashcards
  • Paired activity challenge.

We could not find anything else which supported this learning objective and our students loved it - particularly when we placed the PPT onto our classroom whiteboard and played the challenge together! Therefore, whilst we printed the product out and used it in a math center - it can be used as a PowerPoint activity to share with the whole class and discuss mathematical concepts.

Thank you for visiting our store and viewing our products.

Best wishes
