Description

This mini-unit is an excellent means of introducing students to the theories of WHY government is necessary and HOW government should work.

After explaining the two extremes of government power, absolute versus mob rule, the PowerPoint guides students through the different theories of Niccolò Machiavelli, Thomas Hobbes, John Locke, Charles de Montesquieu, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau.

The PowerPoint presentation is complete with slide notes, highlighted titles, vocabulary words, and important ideas, and includes custom animation. The presentation is saved using a 97-2003 format.

The resource also includes a graphic organizer in which students will identify the main points associated with each philosophe and answer questions based on the discussion.

Practice close-reading skills with a series of biographies on Niccolò Machiavelli, Thomas Hobbes, John Locke, Charles de Montesquieu, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau. These biographies re-enforce the ideas presented in the PowerPoint and include questions to check for understanding. In using these in my own class room, students are encouraged to:

1. Number the paragraphs

2. Read the biography

3. Highlight answers in the reading

4. Use complete sentences.

5. Identify the paragraph where they find the answer

Answer keys for each biography demonstrate these steps. Academic and content vocabulary words and definitions are included.

For those seeking distance learning options, the biographies, graphic organizer, and questions can be readily converted to digital activities using Google Slides.

Finally, the resource includes two assessments based on the PowerPoint presentation and biographies. Both assessments include multiple choice questions. Additionally, one assessment obliges students to complete a chart stating both why people might need rules and why people might not need rules. The other assessment calls for sentence answers based on the discussion. Assessments have been uploaded in Word format to allow for changes as needed.
