Description

Students will read and analyze 5 primary source excerpts and 1 image related to different nationalist and revolutionary movements in Europe and Latin America in the 1800s by answering 35 questions and completing an extension task. The sources are from Mazzini in Italy, Wilhelm I in Germany, Hidalgo in Mexico, Murillo in Bolivia, the Revolutionary Committee in Russia, and de Lamartine from France. This is arranged so that you can use it as a stations activity, a gallery walk, or a learning packet. Some questions have students compare and contrast the excerpts. The answers are included where appropriate and this would work with a sub!

Sample questions include:
--Why would they have been “sad” while preparing to fight?
--How does he hope to see Italy achieve this overarching goal?
--Explain Mazzini’s connection between revolution and insurrection.
--Using the citation as your clue, describe the historical context leading up to this excerpt.
--How are those words reflected in the painting?
--Is the first paragraph in support of or in opposition to the Tsar and how do you know?
--Write a contextually appropriate synonym, or identification, for sycophant.
--Explain the meaning of the phrase, “ambitious grasp” and who were the “tyrants?” Connect that to the historical context of why Mexico sought independence.
--Which excerpt is most revolutionary and why? What about most nationalistic? If you chose different sources explain why.
