Description
Students will read excerpts from Neville Chamberlain's speech about achieving peace in Europe right after the Munich Conference in 1938. They will demonstrate an understanding of the text by answering 17 questions (a mix of academic, opinion, and a creative task). This would be great for a sub and the answers are included where appropriate.
Sample questions include:
--Citing evidence from the text, what was one of Chamberlain’s primary goals at Munich?
--Did Chamberlain see this as a British diplomatic victory, why or why not?
--Explain what might have led to the expression of “shame?”
--Why did Chamberlain argue that Czechoslovakians had earned admiration and respect?
--To what degree do you think Chamberlain admired, or detested, Mussolini and why?
--At what point during this speech did Chamberlain display preeminent leadership and how? At what point during this speech was he most relatable/humanistic and why?
--Given the opportunity, what would you title this speech and why?
