Description
Designed by Shawneen Morrison. This simulated activity assigns students the role of a custom’s enforcement officer evaluating compliance with the Stamp Act of 1765. Students begin with a briefing that explains the Stamp Act from a British perspective. Then they estimate the total number of non-compliant articles in their own homes. This palpable demonstration of the invasive nature of the Stamp Act (in spite of its small monetary impact) serves as the basis for a written explanation of the colonial outrage that ultimately develops into a rallying cry for the American Revolution.
The rubric for this assignment is included along with a follow-up student writing reflection that is used as an extension in Shawneen Morrison’s classroom.
The lesson is easily adapted to higher grade levels by increasing the complexity of the written component.
